Dr Murphy earned a PhD in Clinical Medicine from Trinity College Dublin, and a Masters in Public Health from University College Dublin before joining the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) within the US National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Presenter: Dr Gwen Murphy Phd, MPH

Dr Gwen Murphy is Senior Research Fellow and Deputy Head of the Cancer Screening and Prevention Research Group (CSPRG) in the Department of Surgery and Cancer at Imperial College London.

Gwen is a cancer epidemiologist whose research explores risk factors and early detection of oesophageal, stomach, and bowel cancers. She has worked across the globe in areas of extremely high cancer incidence where her research looks to identify and understand risk factors with a view to enabling cancer prevention. She has received research funding from the US National Cancer Institute and Cancer Research UK. In recognition of her research, Gwen has received awards including the Sarah Purser Medical Scholarship, a Cancer Prevention Research Training Merit Award and the Fellows Award for Research Excellence. In 2019 she received an Outstanding Mentor Award from the US National Cancer Institute. 

Gwen earned a PhD in Clinical Medicine from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, and an MPH from University College Dublin. In 2006 she joined the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics at the US National Cancer Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, where she worked until 2019. In 2019 she was appointed Executive Director of Epidemiology at LetsGetChecked, Dublin, before joining Imperial College in 2022.

ABOUT THIS TALK/SESSION: 

Professor Iain McNeish is a Registered Dietitian at Imperial and will give a talk on How salt, sugar, fats affect the cardiovascular system/risks.  

Iain McNeish is Professor of Oncology and Head of the Division of Cancer within the Department of Surgery and Cancer.  He is also the Director of the Ovarian Cancer Action Research Centre and Cancer theme lead in the Imperial NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC).  Externally, he is Chair of the NCRI Gynaecological CSG.

His research focusses on ovarian cancer, specifically developing improved therapies through improved understanding of disease biology.  With James Brenton in Cambridge, he co-leads the BriTROC translational research collaborative and holds a programme grant from Cancer Research UK investigating copy number alterations in ovarian high grade serous carcinoma (HGSC) as a possible prognostic and predictive biomarker.

His group has also recently developed novel transplantable murine models of HGSC using CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology to allow investigation of novel therapies in an immunocompetent model.  These transplantable cells are freely available to researchers.
