Welcome to the latest edition of the ParkLife newsletter!

We know, our news articles can be a bit like Marmite - you either love 'em or think they're drivel. But hey, that's the beauty of our diverse community, isn't it?

ParkLife Newsletter: Sept - Oct 2024 The Marmite Mix-Up Edition!

Wow, How Did This Happen? Baffled and bewildered, how on earth did we manage all of this in just three months?

Last year, calendar planning was a breeze; this year? Not so much. Fast forward 12 months, and now we have scheduled in over 42 activities, events for the next 3 months, and extra random “fings” (because apparently, surprise fings, keep things spicy).

Time to Read:  30 minutes to read and once seen, cannot be unseen, be warned.

Life is like a camera, focus on what’s important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives, and if things don’t work out, just take another shot.

Thanks to the support from clubcard holders, ParkLife Café regulars, and donations. Who knew community chaos could be so...productive?

We are The Friends of Harrow Weald, and let’s be honest, time is not be our friend, but at least we’re all in this chaotic dance together!

Looking at life in a holistic way.

A Peek Behind the Chaos: What We've Been Up To!

Last month, we had this grand idea of crunching some numbers to see how we’re doing. You know, that grown up real “organisational” stuff. But in true fashion, time pulled a Houdini, and suddenly, we’re neck-deep in plans for the next three months.

Who needs spreadsheets when you can plan for a future that feels like organised chaos?

We juggled countless projects, events, and activities, none of which would be remotely possible without all of the wonderful (and probably slightly mad) folks that help, and let’s not forget, PARKLIFE is also one of our projects.

July – August Reflections

By late August, we started locking in community events on the calendar. This is always the point where we pause and reflect... on how much we forgot to do. Also, we began the task of piecing together notes from the archives of Imperial College London researchers. It’s like assembling a 10,000-piece puzzle where all the pieces are blank.

August also saw ParkLife forced to open on one of our days off, to support an amazing peer group project, for post stroke victims.

September – December: Buckle Up
As September rolled in, so did the wonderful, kind, and slightly mad crowd that brings our tiny building to life, In all seriousness, though, it’s you lot who make this happen.

We welcome friends old and new to join us, come to an event, with over 30 booked in your spoilt for choice, chat with a stranger, and walk away happier.

Together, we’re capable of more than we could have ever imagined, and for that, we are full of gratitude and a hint of disbelief. Thanks for keeping us on our toes!

We are always looking back and forward

The Harrow Weald Heath Hub.

Together we achieve remarkable things!

Nothing is really one size fits all, we are all individuals and different, yet everything is interconnected in different ways.

Projects take time to build and settle, we are always looking for volunteers to help deliver projects, some people spend just two hours, others offer help remotely.

The Harrow Weald Health Hub has started to take shape like a toddler learning to walk, with lots of wobbles, but hey, it’s evolving!

One minute we were quietly plotting our next move, and the next, we’ve been catapulted into a whirlwind of subjects we never even knew we needed to learn about.

Imperial College London:

We’ve dived into the delightful world of how salt, sugar, and fat wreak havoc on our bodies (thanks for that bit of joy), uncovered amazing new research into ovarian cancer and left notes on the archive,  discovered the joys the researchers get from our shopping loyalty cards for their Cancer Loyalty Card Study (CLOCS). Who knew?

We held a talk on an AI stethoscope, because apparently, even robots now listen better than we do, and discovered that Dr Mihir Kelshiker the inventor is a local boy, who had star trek on his mind when he developed this world class medical advancement, who wouldn’t want to discuss that over tea?

Each session is not academic or intense, but a friendly easy to understand explanation followed by a chat!

We have started to book in researcher sessions for the next three months all welcome Details Here >>>>>

Harrow Weald Health Hub Peer Groups

We’ve got Healthy Living Peer Groups, Diabetes Groups, Wellbeing Groups, Busby Clubs (not to be confused with Buzz Lightyear), and let’s not forget the Busby clubs for group a  corporate style bonding session for community groups. That’s right, corporate bonding for charities, but with more tea and fewer awkward PowerPoints.

We have been is awe of the people we meet on Tuesdays for "the Healthy living post stroke group” all an inspiration, seeing how medical care has advanced.

OFF THE WALL

Art Exhibition at ParkLife Cafe, Harrow Weald

Come and meet the artists

Starts 9th September  6:30pm - 8:30pm

Step into a world of colour, creativity, and fun at our upcoming art exhibition at ParkLife Cafe, Harrow Weald!

This unique event features the incredible work of mature exhibitors, all members of Art With Mike, a collective of enthusiastic, budding, and improving artists from diverse backgrounds and nearby locations.

Though many of our artists took up drawing and painting later in life, their passion and talent shine brightly in every piece on display.

Our exhibits feature a wide range of media, with each artwork reflecting the personal journeys and vibrant imaginations of these mature exhibitors. Whether you're a fan of funky, trendy, or cartoony styles, there's something here to delight your senses and tickle your fancy.

Under the expert guidance of Mike Cahillane, a highly experienced and excellent artist, the members have grown from beginners to confident creators. Mike’s mentorship has inspired us to explore new techniques, express our unique perspectives, and create art that’s as joyful as it is thought-provoking.

Come and experience the lively atmosphere of this one-of-a-kind exhibition, where art knows no age limits, and creativity is celebrated at every stage of life. We can’t wait to share our work with you!

Harrow Litter Pickers: The Fabulous Clean-Up Crew

Take the fabulous Harrow Litter Pickers as an example. This community of caring residents is all about positivity, with bursts of humour at what they find, probably flabbergasted by some ancient relics!

The HLP numbers are growing with kind people, community groups, and individuals of all ages embracing one simple objective: keeping our community nicer. The litterers? A minority who has yet to grasp the joy of a cleaner Harrow.

Park Groups, Nature Groups, and More

From park groups to nature enthusiasts, Harrow is buzzing with free events, choirs, arts, and charities helping specific areas of our society. Community groups are encouraging wildflowers around the borough.

PROJECT UPDATES

Free means inclusion:

  • Over 94.5% of our community events are free.

One minute we were quietly plotting our next move, and the next, we’ve been catapulted into a whirlwind of subjects we never even knew we needed to learn about. Each session is not academic or intense, but a friendly easy to understand explanation followed by a chat!

Meanwhile, our Harrow Weald Health Hub has started to take shape like a toddler learning to walk, with lots of wobbles, but hey, it’s evolving!

Here's the scoop on what we've got brewing:

We have been is awe of the people we meet on Tuesdays for "the Healthy living post stroke group” each person an inspiration, seeing how medical care has advanced. We also somehow found time to celebrate harmony hubs, create a "Bug Squad" (don’t ask), and saw community groups borrowing litter-picking equipment as if it were the latest fashion trend, all sprinkled with the regular appearances from the stars of the "Moron Chronicles." (They really should take a bow.)

Attention, all purveyors of chaos and negativity,

Welcome to the Moron Chronicles, where we shine a spotlight on those who defy logic and leave us scratching our heads in disbelief.

But beware, for while we may showcase the absurdity of certain individuals, our focus remains on positivity and community building.

So, if you're here, there or anywhere spreading negativity, you're in the wrong place in your life. Instead, join us in our mission to uplift and inspire through our growing network of kind community partnerships.

Nature controls everything

Mustard Marmite

THANK YOU..........Gratitude Galore..........

Cue the Puking Lovesick Drivel Warning (LSD):

We’re truly floored:

  • By the sheer number of community groups we have the honour (and sometimes bewilderment) of working with.
  • Dumbfounded by the massive support and commitment from our partners. Seriously, who are these lovely people?
  • Regularly humbled by the kind words we receive. It’s almost like we’re doing something right...who knew?
  • Staggered by the reviews – when people aren’t shaking their heads in confusion, they’re apparently leaving glowing feedback.
  • And let’s be honest, nothing warms our chaotic little hearts like that knowing look of kindness from someone who gets what we’re trying to do (or at least pretends to).

But here’s the kicker: We didn’t create ParkLife, we just cobbled together the charity. It’s the people who use the space that bring the real energy, positivity, and direction. We are just try to keep up!
